Sunset over the Waterville Plateau, Wash.
The first gray streaks
relume the eastern sky

Then blues and golds
bathe clouds and snow-capped peaks

The birds awake;
the hem of night goes by

Rivers reflect
the bluing tent of day

The shadows slide
down slopes and behind trees

Each rock and tuft
of grass textures the hills

Sunflowers raise
their petaled faces up

Dew drops on webs
sparkle like jeweled thread

Sunbeams stream down
to dapple forest floors

Springtime turns snow
and ice to mountain streams

Awaking life
through last years fallen leaves
